Terrific Book for All Ages By Laura of Harvest Lane Cottage Thank you BookLook for this review copy.Years ago when my children were 10, 4, 2 and brand new, we sold our house in mid-November. We planned to stay in a motel for a couple of weeks until the sellers moved out of the house we were buying. We'd be in our new home by Thanksgiving... or so we thought. The sellers wouldn't sign the papers until the first week of December then refused to move out until December 26th!We lived and homeschooled for seven weeks in a motel during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Everything I used to make Christmas was in storage. I borrowed a tabletop tree, went to Hobby Lobby for a few decorations for the room, and bought our first Christmas book. It was a season of watching the Home and Garden and Food channels and not being able to make or do anything. ~grin~ It was hard at the time, but it is a sweet memory, and new traditions arose from it.One of my children's favorite Christmas traditions is reading Christmas stories. Each year they look forward to receiving a new picture book. It's been many years since we started this tradition. My oldest is now 24 and my youngest 14. I recently asked the kids if they want to continue the tradition. I was met with a resounding, "Yes!" The Legend of the Christmas Cookie will be this year's additon to our growing Christmas storybook library.Richard Cowdrey captured the spirit of Dandi Daley's nostalgic Christmas story with charming illustrations of a simpler time. It is set during the Depression time, and shows a way that one woman and her son found to show love in a tangible way during a very difficult time in their life. The focus on giving even when we are ourselves are in need is a beautiful one. That's a message we all need in these uncertain times.I recommend this book for a young boy or girl in your life... or, as in our case, a houseful of teens.

I absolutely love books that share important messages with children because they really seem to stick with kids. When important messages and life lessons are shared though a book kids seem to remember them much better than just being told why or why we don't do things by mom and dad.The Legend of the Christmas Cookie is a story about a boy named Jack who's family is barely scraping by. One day Jack sees his mom making cookies but is only disappointed when he learns they are for the poor people at church and he cannot have any. His mother saves one cookie and gives it to the little boy on Christmas morning. Suddenly there's a knock at the door and it's someone needing some food and so Jack takes this opportunity to give them his only cookie. It is through that cookie that he is able to share about Jesus and tell about the Christmas story. The Legend of the Christmas Cookie is beautifully written and the illustrations throughout the book are equally beautiful. My kids enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it!Disclosure: I received product(s) for free, in exchange for my honest review. I only recommend products I've used personally, and believe will be good fit for consumers. If you found my review helpful, please remember to click "yes" below.

Coming from a family of bakers, I love everything about this big and colorful Christmas book. Reading it made me look forward to that time, which is coming up soon, when the winds will turn cold and my kitchen will hold the aromas of cookies baking for the Holidays. The story is told through Jack, whose father has traveled to the West to find work (I assume this is during the time of the Great Depression). Jack returns home one cold day to find his mother baking cookies for the needy in their church.Through her telling of the history of the cookies, Jack learns about the tradition from his father's homeland of pressing the cookie dough into wooden cutouts to form the shapes which can be used to tell the story of Jesus' birth.Jack is thrilled to receive one of the cookies as a Christmas gift but you will have to read the book to see what he does with it. ;)The story by Dandi Daley Mackall is beautifully done, simple enough to keep the attention of young children but there is enough of a plot that older kids will enjoy it, too. The illustrations looked familiar and I was pleased to see they are by Richard Cowdrey, whose illustrations in The Legend of the Candy Cane were equally beautiful.I highly recommend this book to give to children in your world this year for Christmas.Oh, not only does the book contain the history of the cookies Mom is baking but also the recipe. You could use a shortbread mold I expect, should you not be from Southern Germany or Austria and have a few wooden molds sitting around. This book was provided by the publisher for the purpose of review but the opinions are my own.
