In the ever-changing world of health care policy, measurable improvements are more important than ever—and predictable, intuitive results are the goal. But when it comes to accountable health care, data analysis can yield unexpected answers, sometimes even proving counterintuitive to practices that seemed to make sense at the time.
For that reason, developing proper analytic skills can seem like a comedy of errors, requiring patience and willingness to learn from your mistakes. Erroneous guidelines, puzzling policies, and baffling data have all been put forth in the name of improving patients’ health outcomes—some since debunked, and others proven surprisingly effective.
In Riddles in Accountable Health Care, experienced physician Eran Bellin takes readers on a fun and fascinating romp through these complex issues in the world of health care, answering questions whose answers may seem obvious, but upon analysis can yield some paradoxical results.
In the vein of Freakonomics and The Tipping Point, Riddles in Accountable Health Care provides an educational and thoroughly entertaining look at a subject sometimes fraught with overwhelming details—and guides health care professionals, med students, and the public alike toward a whole new way of thinking about data analysis.

By Robert E., Connors A must read for every medical school student and every clinician who manages Medical Home patients or who has an interest in Accountable Care and Population Health! I recommend that the book also be read by every Hospital Administrator in America. It commences with a Montefiore Medical Center and Bronx RHIO's experience in using the Clinical Looking Glass advanced clinical intelligence cohort builder to improve healthcare quality for nearly a half million persons in the Bronx, NY. Having worked with Dr. Bellin to evaluate the use of the Clinical Looking Glass in the Department of Defense, I can attest that he is a brilliant clinical informaticist and epidemiologist who has extraordinary insight into the right questions that must be asked and answered in order to improve health outcomes. He is an author who writes from experience and really cares about improving health access, availability, acceptability, cost-effectiveness, continuity, and quality. The book provides stimulating thought concerning many accountable care riddles; whether an institution is really as great as its reputation; the complicated issue of re-admissions; and who is responsible and accountable for the events of hospitalization. The book is full of relevant clinical study examples employing advanced data analytics and predictive models that help solve the interesting riddles of epidemics like diastolic dysfunctions, obesity, hypercalcemia, and others. The Congress, Executive Branch, and the Social Security Administration should heed the warnings in the last chapter on "Silencing Death", in interest of the living. Robert E. Connors, FACHE, PMP, MS in IT, MHA
