A woman who thinks she has the perfect life is suddenly hit with reality. Her life isn't what she thought it was, she isn't who she thought she was. She's faced with a sudden family illness. A poignant journey begins. This story had me both laughing and crying at times. The only thing that kept it from getting 4 stars for me was the fact that there was quite a bit of proofreading that needed to be done.

By Amazon Customer While I'm known to enjoy a steamy read, I also like to cuddle up with a sweet romance now and again. And I'm so glad I cuddled up with this one.The chemistry between Blake and Maria is wonderful. Maria is haunted by a tragic past that deals with domestic violence and Blake is searching for his birth mother while struggling to live up to the image needed as the son of a governor running for president.Ms. Gray does a wonderful job capturing the emotions that go with these issues while treading lightly so as not to overwhelm the reader.Does Blake find his mother? Does Maria come to terms with her past? Do they finally end up together? You'll have to read THE ROAD HOME to find out.

Winner of the Special Award for Scholarly Publishing from the Association for Mormon LettersScholarly interest in Mormon theology, history, texts, and practices--what makes up the field now known as Mormon studies--has reached unprecedented levels, making it one of the fastest-growing subfields in religious studies. In this volume, Terryl Givens and Philip Barlow, two leading scholars of Mormonism, have brought together 45 of the top experts in the field to construct a collection of essays that offers a comprehensive overview of scholarship on Mormons. The book begins with a section on Mormon history, perhaps the most well-developed area of Mormon studies. Chapters in this section deal with questions ranging from how Mormon history is studied in the university to the role women have played over time. Other sections examine revelation and scripture, church structure and practice, theology, society, and culture. The final two sections look at Mormonism in a larger context. The authors examine Mormon expansion across the globe--focusing on Mormonism in Latin America, the Pacific, Europe, and Asia--in addition to the interaction between Mormonism and other social systems, such as law, politics, and other faiths. Bringing together an impressive body of scholarship, this volume reveals the vast range of disciplines and subjects where Mormonism continues to play a significant role in the academic conversation. The Oxford Handbook of Mormonism will be an invaluable resource for those within the field, as well as for people studying the broader, ever-changing American religious landscape.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A preliminary review By Learner I admire Mormon scholar Terryl Givens, so I was interested to find that he has edited a new book on Mormons, published by no less than Oxford U. press. This book is a collection of short chapters, each written by a different scholar. The book’s introduction provides a brief history of the field of Mormon Studies, and explains the book’s approach: "No attempt is made to provide comprehensive coverage.... What the editors have attempted to do is provide a number of chapters by leading scholars in their fields, to convey the range of disciplines and subjects where Mormonism might enrich and recontextualize any number of academic conversations."Chapter one is by Jan Shipps, who for decades has been the best-known scholar on Mormonism. She is not a Mormon herself. Her chapter gives a brief summary of Mormon history. It’s the standard narrative that I as a Mormon have always heard and understood. However, it also includes the role the Book of Mormon has played in the church over time (originally a relevant text, then an icon, then once again relevant text). The second chapter is by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Daniel Walker Howe. This chapter takes a historical view that is less familiar to most members of my church: "To many people, the Mormon religion seems unique; its doctrines, whether properly understood or not, very strange and startling. . . . Yet, if one examines the context in which the Latter-Day Saint Church first appeared and spread, much that might seem unique about it will come to appear characteristic of the time and place of its origin."Howe shows that key traits of Mormonism - temperance, restorationism, millennialism, utopian communalism - correspond to parallel developments in the early 19th century milieu in which Mormonism began. That’s the first part of the book, as far as I have been able to read from Amazon’s Look Inside excerpt. From what I have read so far, and from the Table of Contents, I recommend this book as a valuable introduction to Mormon Studies. I’m not a scholar, and I’m not familiar with most of the contributing scholars. At least one of them is a known critic of the church. Others are devout Mormons, some even church-employed historians. The high price of this book leads me to believe it’s aimed at libraries and universities. I hope in the future, one way or another, to read the entire book. I also look forward to reading complete reviews here by readers fortunate enough to have access to the entire book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A must for everyone with an interest/involvment in psychodrama. Breaks new ground By Caril I am excited by this book, for several reasons. Firstly, it incorporates the physiology of the work of psychodrama in a new, comprehensive way that I do not think has been done before. Secondly, the examination of asthma through case studies identifies and challenges the co-dependency between medicine and the pharmaceutical industry. This is done with humility but with the rigour of a scientifically trained medical practitioner using his knowledge, professional experience and rational deduction. Thirdly, there is a memoir aspect to the writing, stepping the reader through the authors thinking, complex medical concepts and procedures described to be understandable for people with no medical or related knowledge. The style is lyrical and entertaining. Read over coffee or tea and one can almost imagine chatting and laughing with the author. It is useful to consider the method Peter has used to reach his conclusions. Peter is at the end of his career. He was trained in the scientific method. He is well used to using facts/known knowledge, critiquing research and the conclusions drawn and distinguish knowledge carefully from suppositions. He brings this to his medical practice, combined with the wisdom of medical staff from yesteryear: Listen to the patient. Additionally he explores the placebo effect and the adjunct effects of medical and pharmacological treatment, such as being attended to, plus kind and loving attention. He combines scientifically known knowledge and logical thinking/discussion to see and name/create a range of hypotheses, which he then tests. I love the discussion of the alveoli sphincters: ‘I … can’t imagine that the body… (has) 800,000 very intricate and complicated sets of muscles and glands, for the sole purpose of making a disease called asthma. It just does not make sense.’ I have never considered how many alveoli I have, yet my life is dependent on the healthy functioning of them for the psychosomatic role of healthy strong vigorous breather! Rigorous use of logical deduction is a strength to Peter’s discussion.I found the theme of adrenal exhaustion/depletion and stimulating the adrenal matrix intriguing. The blood levels of adrenalin in people attending accident and emergency departments has been measured, and most people attending have high levels of adrenalin. However people with asthma unexpectedly have very low levels. The first response to such information is to assume that this is an aspect of the illness to be corrected by medical intervention. However, Peter kept asking important questions and made unexpected links. Specifically that people with asthma may have excellent reasons to have ‘turned off’ their adrenal matrix. During psychodrama enactment, Peter and his trainers identified body responses consistent with adrenal collapse or turnoff, and that with integrative catharsis the adrenal matrix can be stimulated back into action. A stunning example is described on page 169: ‘Pat’s 5’3” being had … been totally regressed to the terrified and wheezing 11 year old… She took an enormous breath.’ It is special that Peter knows what is happening in the body: it takes about 30 seconds for the blood to circulate around the body, so it takes about 30 seconds ‘for her to turn from wheezing, pale and blueish to bright scarlet … and scream HELL NO.’ He sees evidence of the adrenal system being turned on. This woman’s asthma was cured. She now supplied her own adrenalin. This book is so much more than Asthma and wheezing. I would like a sub-title to the book to warm potential readers to the treasure trove of psychodramatic experience and wisdom that Peter shares. Such subtitles could be ‘Development of fierce lion self protecter roles’, or ‘Reactivating the adrenal matrix through psychodramatic evocation of integrative catharsis’! But this would exclude warming up potential readers to the outcome of Peter’s endeavours.Acutely aware of the need to measure effectiveness of psychodrama, Peter has computerised the Family/Whanau/Social Atom. This enables clients to review how their relationships are changing to include more good people in their lives while setting limits and distancing unwanted people. Carefully stepping the reader through the process with many examples, Peter demonstrates graphing a person’s responses to psychodrama sessions and the related role development. Points such as when there is no suicide risk and when the person is ready to be discharged are identified. This section invites a sub-title such as ‘Outcome informed practice in Psychodrama’.This book is an exceptional addition to psychodrama’s body of work. If you are exploring psychosomatic roles you need to read this book. If you are needing to demonstrate the effectiveness of your practice, and you are working individual people or people in group, you will do well to explore the family/whanau/social atom scorer.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I loved how vulnerable these characters were By Hazel First of all, I loved how vulnerable these characters were. Tessa and Ben were just like real people, not perfect, and with fears and insecurities like all of us. I found that refreshing.Ben showed how our childhoods really do affect our adult life, usually it's women who are portrayed as having 'baggage', but Ben's past had him shackled. Although he was living life and telling himself he was happy within the confines of those invisible shackles, it took his love for Tessa and hers for him to free him from his past. At first I wasn't sure I liked him much, just judging him on the surface but once I got to understand why he acted the way he did, my heart went out to him and I was rooting for him and Tessa to get together.Tessa was understandably reluctant to get involved with Ben when he's transferred to her firm. They'd had a brief fling, parted and she never heard from him again. She knows she is still attracted to him but there are so many reasons why she should squash her growing feelings for Ben - office politics, job competition and the jealous office vamp out to make trouble - just to name a few. Plus the mixed signals from Ben himself, drawing her in and pushing her away at the same time.At least she has the unconditional love of her pet yorkie Milo. Tessa's unreserved love for her pet and Ben's cautious interaction with him mirrored their attitudes towards love.It was a great read with a nice balance between the main story of Tessa and Ben's growing romance interwoven with the relationships with co-workers and the office drama. I was racing towards the end to find out out how Tessa and Ben would overcome their obstacles and work things out so they could be together. I highly recommend this book and author.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Dare to Risk All By Reviews By Crystal Where do I start with this great book? First of all look at that adorable cover! I love books that include pets in the storyline so that grabbed my attention right away. Milo in this story is so CUTE. I think I instantly fell in love with the little fellow.Tessa Caldwell works hard at her job and has a pain in the rear end boss that doesn't fully appreciate her. Tessa is one of those ladies that likes to keep things smooth so she tries not to rock the boat. The more the boss doesn't give her credit the more she tries to do a better job. I really liked Tessa. She is a lovely lady that adores her little doggie Milo by the way.Ben Dunham reappears is a suave handsome fellow that can sell anyone anything. He doesn't believe in love or happy ever after. His childhood was not good and he has terrible memories of the only marriage relationship he has seen. He's a nice guy though and really is very thoughtful and very good at his job.Tessa and Ben didn't expect to see each other again after a chance encounter. However when Ben is hired by Tessa boss they are forced to work together and fight the feelings they have for each other. Oh my goodness the chemistry in that office is strong. I loved watching these two get to know each other better and try to fight the attraction they have for each other. They work well together and have a good time in each other company. I enjoyed watching them form a friendship to add a nice base for their instant attraction. There are plenty of obstacles in their path. Someone is out to tear even their friendship apart. There is some very dramatic moments, some really sweet romantic moments and a few slightly steamy moments. These two both have things they must overcome and get through in order for a relationship to work. They really will have to Risk it all.The other thing I enjoyed was the friendship between Tessa and her co-workers. They stand by each other through some troublesome times.Overall I really enjoyed Dare to Risk All. I really enjoyed the storyline. The characters are fun and charming. They have very interesting personality that made the story a lot of fun to read. I loved that Ms. Holmes included cute little Milo in the story. Milo added an interesting and lovable touch to the story.I enjoyed Joyce Holmes writing style. She has nice way of telling an entertaining story and I would certainly love to read more work by her.I would highly recommend this story to anyone that loves a great romance story. I think you will enjoy it. I know I certainly did.I was given the opportunity to read this great story so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Dare to Risk All.

Its crazy how there cars and even houses were that much alike. I don't know if that was a coincidence or just plan out scary. Madison needs to go on with her life and realize that the best woman won. It amazed me how both there daughters got along so good. He planned the wedding right under Shana nose and she didn't know anything. Glad that her mother and father made it. Now that she's pregnant, I need a spinoff from there characters to see how it plays out in the end.

Review

“This book explains how the differences in melanosome number, size, and aggregation patterns contribute to unique patterns and dermatological treatment considerations in the pediatric population. … The purpose is to provide a concise, well-rounded reference for children with darker skin types. The audience is pediatric dermatologists, dermatologists, pediatricians, and family practitioners.” (Patricia Wong, Doody’s Book Reviews, October, 2015)

48 of 51 people found the following review helpful. Nellie Bly: Daring and Smart By Spaz I read this in just a few days but the story will be with me forever. I have an interest in mental health and this book is a snapshot of time when mental health wasn't really understood. Nellie Bly went undercover and sought out the truth of what was happening to mental patients at institutions during a time when it was common to send women away for just about anything. The story turns truly horrifying when she arrives at the island. Her determinitation and bravery began a serious look at the treatment of the patients and had outcomes that would be sure that the patients would be treated with dignity and respect.

32 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Woman Goes Under Cover in 19th Century Asylum By Sondra McClendon Ten Days in a Mad-House is the true account of female journalist Nellie Bly as she took on an undercover assignment investigating the inner working of a mental institution in New York in 1887. The fact that Bly took the risk of getting herself committed, knowing that conditions would be grim, says a lot about her bravery and dedication to journalistic integrity.Over the counrse of ten days, Bly (who expressed surprised at how easily she was pronounced insane) experienced the poor conditions of Blackwell's Island alongside her fellow inmates. She soon found that with inedible food, no heat, filthy water, abusive "nurses", and total seclusion it was no wonder the women had gone insane. Bly viewed them with sympathy and felt that many of them were not, in fact, "crazy", but depressed, sick, or victimized.Bly was soon released and shared her finding in The York World. Her time at Blackwell's Island provided fascinating and disturbing insight into the treatment of mentally ill patients and did result in reform. You might think that a book about mental illness and a corrupt system would be hard to get through, but it is a surprisingly quick read. Bly has a very engaging style of writing and the first-person descriptions are engrossing. She was something of an anomaly in her time, but her risks paid off for the future of the mental health field.Bly had this to say when approached by her editor with the idea of going under cover. "I said I would and I could. And I did." Yes she did. Most of us would not have done the same. A great read for those who enjoy investigative journalism or who are interested in learning more about 19th century asylums. To the latter, I must also recommend Seeing the Insane by Sander Gilman.

27 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Another time and Place By Sean Rickert The book provides an insightful perspective into the way that the mentally ill were treated during the latter part of the 19th Century. Nellie's intrusion into this world is nothing short of frightening. What shocks me the most isn't the way the patients are treated, but the ease with which a moderately sane person could find herself taken out of society and placed in a world where madness was the norm. A wonderful short read, and a must for anyone studying late 19th century society (sane or insane).

Previous title: Take Me With YouFor years Karen has gone to Parker’s home every Saturday afternoon to be tied up, spanked, and aroused by the masterful Dom. She loves being his toy, but it’s all just play. While Parker loves to play with her body and her mind, he’s too good a man to play with her heart. And getting too wrapped up in one person would make it harder to have fun kinky times with others. But now Karen wants something more than a reliable top. She wants love, like her friends Craig and Alicia have, and a future with someone, even if she has to give up kink to get it.Parker can see Karen drifting away from him. He knows she’s searching for something he’s not providing. For years Karen has been his rock--way more than a plaything. He wants what’s best for her, and if that’s not him, he has to accept it--unless he can change her mind, or they can change together.

Karen and Parker are play partners sharing intimate moments for years. The status quo is no longer fine for either one of them. They both seem to want the same thing yet are too hesitant to speak up or discuss it with each other. Karen is a submissive who wants a single masterful Dom. Parker is searching for a submissive of his own. This story is painful to read because it is too realistic. My heart hurts for these two lovers who think they are just friends with benefits. Their relationship grows with their deepened intimacy through the years of erotic power exchange and trust. Ms. Van Yssel does an excellent job of bringing to life real situations between causal play partners who both want more. The fear and hesitation of each character is portrayed in a plausible manner. Their actions due to their misconceptions are distressingly familiar. This character-driven story is lovely to read because it shows how a great friendship can break. It also shows the human side of people when they feel unwanted and unneeded. It lovingly shows how friends and the community can come together to reunite two lovers. Sometimes conflicted couples are staring at each other, eyes wide shut. Ms. Van Yssel does a great job of pulling the emotion through for the reader to vicariously experience. The BDSM in this story is hawt. This is to be expected as Ms. Van Yssel's scenes are always accurate and arousing. In this one, there are a couple of scenes, specifically when Karen scenes with another dominant at the club, which are delightful. I nearly melt into a puddle of goo and wish to experience the same. This kinky romance is recommended to BDSM readers who want realistic contemporary romance with a happily ever after.

Only Karen seems ready to settle down, and finds herself jealous of Parker with other women, and Parker doesn’t really want to see her dating anyone else. This is an interesting dynamic for a romance, they are already sexually intimate, and in some ways emotionally intimate, but they aren’t exclusive and neither is ready to admit that they have already found the perfect relationship in each other. It was refreshing to see these two work for their relationship, they didn’t just meet and fall in love, they had to work on building a real relationship, and I rooted for them. I do admit the injury to get her into his house seemed a bit contrived, but it still worked to force them to face their relationship fears.I loved all the sexual scenes, they were well plotted and very steamy. I definitely enjoyed the inventive scenes and Ms. Yssel seems to have done a lot of research into the BDSM lifestyle. There is one scene early on where Karen is tied up and multiple people, both female and male help with the scene and Karen purposely asks to not know who was involved.I highly recommend this story and it was a great way to pass an afternoon.originally posted at long and short reviews

I don't read much Contemporary mainly because it brings you so close to what can really happen in life, and in so doing can really put at your emotions. Goodbye, Henrietta Street really did that but in such a way that I wanted to keep turning the pages to see how Pippa was going to cope. The entire book was emotional and so real but very well written and had me wondering how she was going to get through everything.Lin Treadgold is able to weave so much into this story, keeps everything completely real and very poignant. The writing is phenomenal. The characters are great. Sven was super hot! You pretty much know what is going to happen but it is the HOW everything happens and then the how everything is pulled together that makes this such a good read.Definitely a plus for any romance lovers out there. Just make sure you're ready for some tears, have the tissues at the ready!

Goodbye Henrietta Street By L `Goodbye Henrietta Street' sat in the list on my phone for quite a while before I got round to reading it and I wish I'd read it sooner. It takes the first few chapters to get absorbed into the novel but after that you won't be able to put it down. Lin has created realistic characters that you grow to love and you find yourself willing Pippa to make the right choices. As well as having an excellent story line and great characters it is also well written. It's unusual to find a book that satisfies all three sections. This is the tale of a couple who lose their son in a terrible accident and the mother's attempt to get her life back on track. A journey of love and heartbreak. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good romantic novel.I received my copy of "Goodbye Henrietta Street" from the author for my honest review.

When I saw the title and the synopsis, it caught my eye. Through reading the story I learned more about life on a small island through the well rounded characters, each with a story to tell. I enjoyed reading Goodbye, Henrietta Street, it captured my imagination through descriptions of the wildlife and scenery. The story of Pippa and her quest for happiness and the good natured Sven who gives her the confidence to move on after a tragedy, is an interesting read. I hope to follow this author in the future. The description of the Isles of Scilly made me want to visit there. I would certainly recommend this book, it was a pleasure to read.

Initial Conditions is a contemporary novel about love, career, family and science. It’s a story of a young woman who follows her dreams, makes choices, and faces the consequences. When Danielle Meller starts to work for professor George Green, she expects the new job will jumpstart her academic career. Soon enough, she discovers that integrating herself in the competitive group is a constant struggle. It is even harder to convince her boss that she is capable of conducting innovative research in theoretical physics. Danielle is fascinated by the recently discovered dark energy – it entices her imagination and draws her to explore its origins. A battle of wills ensues when Green stops her attempts to go beyond the assigned research. Danielle’s boyfriend, Jonathan, also warns her against taking unnecessary risks. Headstrong and ambitious, she doesn’t back off – until she inadvertently opens a personal and professional Pandora’s Box. Now, Danielle has to face the price of following her dreams – if she fails, she might lose the man she loves and everything she has worked for.

Flor’s "Initial Conditions" is a great novel because the story is appealing on several levels. At the beginning, the main character has just finished a Ph.D. in the theoretical physics discipline of cosmology and is beginning a post-doctoral (“post-doc”), temporary work assignment far removed from her family and boyfriend. She must acclimate herself to a new personal, intellectual, and physical environment while self-imposing much (excessive?) career pressure. All of the physics and academic aspects of "Initial Conditions" are highly authentic. Thus, the book is a pleasure to read for those who have lived these conditions and also serves as a window to this world for the great majority who have not sampled the physics post-doc world. As the setting for a novel, Flor’s work is unique! It’s likely I’ll never read another novel that features the amazing text "Numerical Recipes" or speaks at length about debugging and increasing execution speed of C code! The physics in this novel is almost entirely “real.” The critical dénouement of one of the physics story lines references an actual paper from the "Cargèse Lectures in Physics" of more than 40 years ago.But "Initial Conditions" is not just physics – and that’s the point. Physics and academia provide the background for a multi-threaded story of people, relationships, human nature, clashing and changing goals, and love through several generations. The reader will appreciate and remember the conflicts and the resolution among the numerous characters. I recommend "Initial Conditions" to everybody – not just the scientists!

An engaging and interesting story about ambition, academia, and love By Winifred What I really liked about Initial Conditions was its portrayal of a young woman trying to make her way in theoretical physics, working as a post-doc at a university. The professors are too self-absorbed and committed to their own theories to listen to her. She’s forced to do tedious work she doesn’t believe in, and she relentlessly does this work to the point that it harms her health. Mostly she writes code for computer models which have questionable validity since the universe is far too complex to be modeled without drastically simplifying it. Ever since the financial collapse of 2008, one would think we would have learned not to trust computer models of complex systems, but clearly we haven’t. I totally believe this portrayal of a physics department that’s primarily focused on writing grants. Danielle also has issues with her boyfriend, who is not only equally overworked but rarely in one city any length of time. So their relationship takes place mostly on the phone, often with the boyfriend working on his computer at the same time he’s talking to her. This human side of the story I found truthful and captivating. But I had a hard time getting into the book. There are a lot of proofreading errors, and for me there was a bit too much physics. I respect the way the story is based on physics as it’s understood now rather than stretching into the realm of science fiction, but Flor seems to think a reader needs a lot of background in order to understand the story. This results in huge info dumps at the beginning of the book. I’m actually interested in physics, but I didn’t want to hear about all the particles that make up the Standard Model when Danielle was being snubbed and ridiculed. And I thought the snubbing and ridicule could easily be understood without knowing much of anything about the Standard Model. Some of the physics is necessary, since Danielle is so passionate about it, and in the second half of the book, I think Flor achieves a better balance between the science and the story, maybe because the science is shown more through Danielle’s eyes as she sees swirling snowflakes as swirling galaxies. So once you get past the slow beginning, it becomes an engaging and interesting story about ambition, academia, and love.I was given a copy for this honest review.

By bruno This, dear readers, is an inspiring book.As a former student of physics engineering, I can easily relate to the sometimes horrifyingly high expectations workers in the field of physics are subject to, and I also happen to have a keen interest in recent discoveries. As a direct result, Initial Conditions was a read which had me scrambling enthusiastically to catch up to the epic assault on the unknown that our heroic physicists all over the world are engaged in. I enjoyed this book more than I should have. I think many others will too. This book was very well written but somewhat sabotaged by slow pacing and a relatively undramatic climax. This might be my fault, of course; it seems that most books nowadays center on epic or apocalyptic events with cataclysmic climaxes galore. If their books aren’t good enough, why not put aliens in there somewhere to spice things up – that’s your average indie sci-fi author’s mentality. In a genre where the scope and scale of events are outrageous, one risks becoming desensitized and undervaluing more grounded stories.Initial Conditions isn’t the abovementioned kind of book and I respect the author’s decision in this; this book, as she so clearly warns, is not quite a sci-fi but instead a serious work of fiction revolving around science. It also appears to have been properly edited and, aside the somewhat excessive use of adjectives in dialogue attribution, it is beautifully written. In all, this is not a book for everyone but still a very worthwhile read for anyone who, like me, identifies with the subject matter and academic life in general.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book for a fair, honest and non-reciprocal review.

It's a wonderful, feel-good story that you don't see/read often enough anymore! Paul Johnston may be a new author, but he is so talented and I look forward to reading many more of his books! I really love how he includes some of the characters from his last book, 1993 A Gift of a Mother's Love, its like a continuation of it in a way. These first 3 books of Mr. Johnston's really show the kindness of people and the gracious gifts of God! :)
