27 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Great adult contemporary romance. By Bungluna Hugh is a rugby player with the All Blacks of New Zealand. Josie is a soap star of Maori descent. They both look great from the outside, but both are dealing with sorrows and obstacles in their private lives.Hugh's father and step-mother died in a car accident, leaving him with two much younger half-siblings. He's had to change teams and his entire life to try to help care for them. Then his paternal aunt informs him that she's going back to England and he'll have to deal with them on his own, in essence become their sole parent at age 26.Josie had uterine cancer 3 years ago and is still dealing with the fact that she'll never have children. This leaves her reeling, since both by nature and nurture she's a big believer in large families. Then her partner of 3 years leaves her behind in favor of the bright lights of Australia.Hugh and Josie find themselves living next door to each other. There's attraction from the start, but the author allows them to find each other at a pace that makes it more real than the insta-lust so favored nowadays.There are no serial killers, small town sheriffs or pushy best-friends/senior cupids, just two attractive, outwardly successful adults dealing with life and love in the best way they know now.Ms. James has spoiled me, making me addicted to her brand of adult, contemporary romance.

Pryor That’s what this book felt like to me: One of those great, snappy-dialogue comedies of the 1930s, only with, in addition to the glam roles (sports star and TV actress), a couple of pretty realistic kids thrown into the mix, all of it updated to modern-day New Zealand. Normally tough and self-assured rugby player Hugh Latimer, already nursing an injured arm, is trying his best to balance suddenly having to take care of his much-younger half-siblings with the fact that he now finds himself living next door to a fun, quirky, drop-dead-gorgeous-&-a-half soap opera actress who’s got problems of her own. You really can’t help identifying with Hugh, who, on the one hand, is entirely smitten with Josie, and on the other hand, just wants to get back to his comfort zone -- because he’s pretty up-front about the fact that, in the role of parent, he doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing (Who does?). When Hugh and two of his rugby teammates are invited to play a brief scene as themselves on Josie’s soap opera (set in a hospital), things start to seriously percolate, and… well, I don’t wanna give too much away here. But James knows exactly where she’s going with this, and it’s a pretty fun ride getting there. Hugh isn’t perfect, but he’s a profoundly good guy, and you want him to get together with Josie, who deserves a break in life too, because, even though her life looks pretty sweet from the outside, that just goes to show, the outside is by no means the whole picture. No vampires here, or secret agents, ticking time bombs, critically misdirected telegrams, etc., just a couple of nice, smart people drawn together almost gravitationally by mutual attraction in the modern-day New Zealand setting James has made her romantic playground. Good stuff.

I couldn't put it down, the plot pulled me right in and kept me hanging on till the very end. Rosalind James has written yet another amazing Escape to New Zealand book!
