Winner of the Special Award for Scholarly Publishing from the Association for Mormon LettersScholarly interest in Mormon theology, history, texts, and practices--what makes up the field now known as Mormon studies--has reached unprecedented levels, making it one of the fastest-growing subfields in religious studies. In this volume, Terryl Givens and Philip Barlow, two leading scholars of Mormonism, have brought together 45 of the top experts in the field to construct a collection of essays that offers a comprehensive overview of scholarship on Mormons. The book begins with a section on Mormon history, perhaps the most well-developed area of Mormon studies. Chapters in this section deal with questions ranging from how Mormon history is studied in the university to the role women have played over time. Other sections examine revelation and scripture, church structure and practice, theology, society, and culture. The final two sections look at Mormonism in a larger context. The authors examine Mormon expansion across the globe--focusing on Mormonism in Latin America, the Pacific, Europe, and Asia--in addition to the interaction between Mormonism and other social systems, such as law, politics, and other faiths. Bringing together an impressive body of scholarship, this volume reveals the vast range of disciplines and subjects where Mormonism continues to play a significant role in the academic conversation. The Oxford Handbook of Mormonism will be an invaluable resource for those within the field, as well as for people studying the broader, ever-changing American religious landscape.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A preliminary review By Learner I admire Mormon scholar Terryl Givens, so I was interested to find that he has edited a new book on Mormons, published by no less than Oxford U. press. This book is a collection of short chapters, each written by a different scholar. The book’s introduction provides a brief history of the field of Mormon Studies, and explains the book’s approach: "No attempt is made to provide comprehensive coverage.... What the editors have attempted to do is provide a number of chapters by leading scholars in their fields, to convey the range of disciplines and subjects where Mormonism might enrich and recontextualize any number of academic conversations."Chapter one is by Jan Shipps, who for decades has been the best-known scholar on Mormonism. She is not a Mormon herself. Her chapter gives a brief summary of Mormon history. It’s the standard narrative that I as a Mormon have always heard and understood. However, it also includes the role the Book of Mormon has played in the church over time (originally a relevant text, then an icon, then once again relevant text). The second chapter is by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Daniel Walker Howe. This chapter takes a historical view that is less familiar to most members of my church: "To many people, the Mormon religion seems unique; its doctrines, whether properly understood or not, very strange and startling. . . . Yet, if one examines the context in which the Latter-Day Saint Church first appeared and spread, much that might seem unique about it will come to appear characteristic of the time and place of its origin."Howe shows that key traits of Mormonism - temperance, restorationism, millennialism, utopian communalism - correspond to parallel developments in the early 19th century milieu in which Mormonism began. That’s the first part of the book, as far as I have been able to read from Amazon’s Look Inside excerpt. From what I have read so far, and from the Table of Contents, I recommend this book as a valuable introduction to Mormon Studies. I’m not a scholar, and I’m not familiar with most of the contributing scholars. At least one of them is a known critic of the church. Others are devout Mormons, some even church-employed historians. The high price of this book leads me to believe it’s aimed at libraries and universities. I hope in the future, one way or another, to read the entire book. I also look forward to reading complete reviews here by readers fortunate enough to have access to the entire book.
