The Emotional Journey of the Alzheimer's Family, by Robert B. Santulli, Kesstan Blandin

Review “Timely and excellent in reaching the core of Alzheimer’s disease and all of its ramifications.”—Library Journal"The book looks at the myriad ways in which families react to an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Each case is as individual as the patient and the family itself; and when Santulli speaks of a case, he means both patient and family.” x—Valley News“This is not just another book about Alzheimer's disease.”—Alzheimer’s Reading Room“[This] is an important contribution to the literature on Alzheimer’s that should prove helpful both to psychotherapists and also to psychologically sophisticated readers who are seeking an understanding of the emotional dynamics in families that come with the disease.”  —Metapsychology Online Reviews

Review “Much has been written about Alzheimer’s disease and the family, but surprisingly little has been said about the emotional journey along which people travel from the early symptoms of the disease to its ultimate ending in death. In The Emotional Journey of the Alzheimer’s Family, Santulli and Blandin address these struggles and triumphs in a straightforward and accessible way. People with early dementia, family care providers, and health-care professionals will all gain from the wisdom they provide.” (Peter Rabins, MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine)

Esselborn Anyone interested in or involved with a family touched by this dreadful disease could benefit from reading this book. I say this because of its emphasis on the emotional aspects of Alzheimer's disease. Cognitive loss evokes strong negative emotions in the individual experiencing it as well as those observing it. When such feelings arise they are often denied or ignored which only increases one's stress level negatively affecting the health of the care partner, a term the authors prefer over caregiver. Speaking from personal experience, I cannot overemphasize how important it is for these feelings to be addressed as they arise. Santulli and Blandin have provided examples of how this could be accomplished through the use of stories told them by individuals and their families. These stories follow well organized summaries of information about Alzheimer's disease and its impact on families. This technique of using families' stories serves to make the book come alive, makes it more of a page turner than a "text" book. The stories demonstrate how feelings of denial, anger, fear, shame, and grief shape the family dynamic. Each time I reread a section I learn and grow and more importantly find a way to accept and process my negative feelings. I would like to see this book made available to all Alzheimer's families. It can help make the journey much easier for all concerned. I think it should be added to the list of resources provided to a family when a diagnosis is made. I give it five stars!

By Marshall Van Norden My first thought after reading this book was I really wished this book was available when I was taking care of my Mom, 20 years ago. The stories of people dealing with Alzheimer’s patients at home or in a facility was very healing, knowing that most of the behaviors they were exhibiting were not just what my Mom was going thru, but many others had same experiences. I sometimes was overwhelmed by her behavior and totally stressed out many days. I felt guilty putting her in a nursing home. I had many years experiences with taking care of patients, but my Mom’s care was so difficult, because she was my Mother and there was no information to reassure me that I was doing anything right. This book is a must read for everyone who is dealing with Alzheimer disease. I give this book 5 stars I.L.D.

Whether it is Alzheimer’s or Dementia this book gives an insight that is more than just helpful to love ones trying to understand. The stories and real life experiences bring the message home far better than just a theoretical explanation could ever do. Two thumbs up, great job. Thank you, M. Van Norden
