Three Talks on Prayer Given in 1895
Talks that will help deepen your walk with the Lord (15 000 words)After arriving back from his tour of America in the autumn of 1895, Andrew Murray had become such a sought after preacher that he was invited to speak to vast crowds at Exeter Hall.
But just before he was due to leave for South Africa, the organizers of his tour requested that he speak on prayer at a much smaller gathering of full-time workers and interested Christians.
These, then, are the three talks he gave on that occasion.
The first deals with JESUS' DESIRE FOR US TO BE ONE. And the only way this can happen, says Murray, is for the love of God to be shed abroad in our hearts. We will then have the power to effectively pray for others and the coming of God's Kingdom.
The second talk focuses on THE SECRET OF EFFECTUAL PRAYER. It stresses the need to submit to the Spirit's teaching, and to give ourselves to Him, as the Spirit of Intercession, to pray in us.
The third talk, WITH WINGS AS EAGLES, teaches us how to wait upon God. It is as we wait that He will reveal himself to us and keep our spirits continually renewed. Murray also points to God's promises in Isaiah 64:4 that tells us that as we wait, we can expect to receive something utterly beyond our comprehension.
These insightful talks are just as applicable to us today as to those Christians at Exeter Hall in 1895.

By amanda maskell This selection of 3 talks by Andrew Murray makes an excellent companion to "Andrew Murray at Keswick" which I have read previously. The first talk was taken from Jesus' high priestly prayer in john 17, focusing on verses 20-23. Andrew Murray diagnoses that among God's people there was a strong desire to see more of God's love to flow between them. The description he gives of the coldness and division that sometimes existed in the church of his day is still relevant today, but I wonder if he would still find that same desire for love within todays church. Mr Murray asserts that the reason behind any lack of love is that we are not counting on God to bring it about by the Holy Spirit and instead are trying to achieve it ourselves. The conclusion to this talk is a challenge to love beyond just those people who are part of our circle.Talk two covered the secrets of effectual prayer. It starts with the liberating concept that admitting we cannot pray opens the way for us to receive the help of the Holy Spirit. When we think we know what to do our prayers in fact become a work of the flesh. Instead we need to humbly invite the Holy Spirit into our hearts.Of course all that Mr Murray has talked about does not come to us in an instant. He addresses this aspect of waiting in his third talk Working and Waiting. These talks contain timeless truths that have not lost their relevance despite being given more than a century ago. Truth from God does not have a use by date, and Mr Murray has presented such truth in a vary accessable way, gently convicting us and turning us back to the source of help.

Timeless encouragement By Bruce Bennie To read these three messages delivered by Andrew Murray at Exeter Hall, is to suddenly feel as if you are also sitting in that small meeting room listening directly to this venerated man of God. The very weight of his heart for God’s glory and his tireless caring for God’s servants, is conveyed with an earnestness that can inspire us even today. Murray speaks to the crucial reality of God’s love within the life of the church, words that are as vital for his generation as ours. And he acknowledges the struggles of our hearts by saying: “I do not ask, “Have you attained that?” But I may ask, “Have you aimed at that?” For Murray, as for Jesus (John 13:35), the love of God in the hearts of believers was to be the living proof that God had indeed sent the Son, and that Christ would be seen to be a very present Reality in the midst of a skeptical world.Murray moves into a call to prayer, and reminds us of the power it can wield on behalf of others. Finally, he finishes on a stirring call to rise up on wings of eagles, wings that God has already given us in the Holy Spirit, if we would but wait on God to lift us up into the Father’s great purposes. All too soon, Murray acknowledges he must conclude his addresses to that gathering. But thanks to the efforts of Olea Nel in capturing these messages for us, his words are not lost in the haze of time, but can live on to encourage countless thousands of believers in their walk with Christ today.

Practical teaching on three key elements of powerful prayer By Ian Acheson This short ebook captures three talks Murray addressed to the leaders of a congregation he had spent some months with in London. All three talks cover some aspect of prayer. I found the second and third to be the most relevant for myself. The second talk is titled the "The Secret of Effectual Prayer" which Murray sums up to be, in humility, we acknowledge that we don't know what to pray and so we open our hearts for the Spirit to guide our prayer time. If we come too often with a set agendas then we don't allow the Spirit to be in charge which is what effectual prayer is dependent upon. The third talk was on the significance of waiting on the Lord and is a short study of that wonderful verse in Isaiah: "Those that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; …" (Isaiah 40:31). In question and answer format (as he does with the other talks) he outlines how we wait, why it's important, and the significance of having eagles wings.Murray manages to make difficult concepts (e.g., how does one wait upon the Lord?) practical and implementable. I so appreciate his teaching and I'm off to purchase a few more of his works especially as they are so affordable on Kindle.
