This is a book about the minimum everyone should know about their body and its common ailments. It is a condensation of a 6 year medical school course into a practical "owners' manual" for day to day use. It starts with a basic description of a cell and includes basics of sciences of Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and so on and illustrates the components of all the systems that make up the human body. It then covers some of the most common diseases that each organ/system can suffer e.g. Hypertension, Asthma, Stroke and Diabetes and so on. It also has a section for general health issues e.g. overweight, sleep disturbances/insomnia, travel medicine and (for) First Aid. At the end of it there is a useful compendium of addresses and telephone numbers of local and national organisations in Australian health system.

Not only will this book be helpful for those who have background in medicine but for non-medical students and professionals who would like to know more about basic medical sciences and common diseases. As a medical lecturer for a medical transcription school, this will be a good reference for non-medical students who needs to familiarize themselves with basic the medical subjects and medical terminologies. The medical terms are simple, and easily understood. A book that has compiled all the basic medical sciences in one reference. The book is simple yet informative. Diagrams are also helpful to support information most especially for Human Anatomy topics. The diseases and medical conditions discussed in this book were the most common and frequently encountered.Overall, this book will be very helpful as a quick reference for students and allied health professionals.

An excellent all-in-one medical reference By Amazon Customer An all-in-one medical reference that encompasses a broad spectrum of medical knowledge; from the most fundamental human physiology to the more complex clinical subjects.Dr. Tony Marshall explores clinical topics in this book by concisely explaining key concepts of pathologies and their management in simplified, readable manner. The book is skillfully written to serve as a practical reference for health professionals; at the same time a highly educational health resource that can engage even a person without medical background.Common diseases encountered in the primary healthcare settings are indexed systematically in this book and discussed in adequate depth. Dr. Tony Marshall also explains complex diseases, right from the symptoms to the diagnosis and treatment, in such elegantly simple concept that any practitioner can apply in conveying health information to a patient. As a community pharmacist, this book adds tremendous value to my daily practice, particularly as a reliable quick reference in discussing key disease state management with my patients and provide essential health advices.Dr. Tony Marshall explores pertinent medical knowledge with practical examples and diagrams, as he builds his explanation like a narrative that is pleasant to read even for a lay person. This is certainly a great coaching material I would use for my interns and a highly recommended health resource for my patients in empowering them with the most fundamental basis of healthcare.

A must have for the bookshelf By Amazon Customer ‘Human Machine’ is a vast wealth of medical knowledge, collected over a number of years in both the medical academic setting, and as a physician treating people in Australia. This book serves partly as a ‘how to’ guide; a bit textbookish, yet not understandable to the lay population. With a well organized index, I was able to easily find the general medical information and the in depth view of diseases, ailments, prescriptions, and helpful illustrated diagrams. The sections I personally found most helpful, and would benefit the population not familiar with medical settings (for whom this book is intended), were both the general medicine and travel medicine sections. Both are, in their respective ways, a valuable resource within a book of the same. I particularly enjoyed the section on vitamins, as they are a source of both over concern and ignorance, simply from lack of knowledge, among people. The specific breakdown of each vitamin, its functions, and signs and symptoms, were a key point to this book. The information on exercise was a pleasant, somewhat unexpected, yet welcomed chapter.Australian residents will find the addendum a valuable source of information regarding local and national healthcare. This book, intended for laypersons, and appreciated by medical professionals, will serve well in the households of Australia.
